Words of the Week

TEXT HERE (2)

This year I have been listening to and reading a variety of motivational and positive messages (both personal and professional in nature). I thought it would be fun to share a quote or phrase I am focusing on for a particular week each Monday with a little background about why the phrase is meaningful to me. This weeks phrase is “focus on the positive.”

Welcome back! Today I am excited to share my first Friday Favorites post of 2016! Feel free to share what you are loving in the comments and I will check your suggestions out.

I have followed Diane Sanfilippo for quite awhile via Instagram and her blog. I recently started listening to her Build a Bad@ss Business podcast and LOVE it! Each episode ranges from 15 – 60 minutes, so they are perfect to listen to while driving to and from work. Prepare to be motivated!

If you follow the Sunflower Paperie Instagram account, you know how excited I was to get fresh blades and cutting mats for my Silhouette Cameo. I love my Silhouette products, so I am super excited to try the new Premium Blade which is supposed to last 3 times longer than the standard blade.

I don’t know how I missed this while he was in space, but Scott Kelly’s Instagram account documenting his year in space is AMAZING! Some of the vibrant colors in his photos are unbelievable! I have also enjoyed seeing his posts since he has returned to earth.

I am such a sucker for dog stories (both happy and sad) and this is one of the best I have heard in quite some time! There is something so touching about this man’s story about his relationship with two rescue dogs. Grab your tissues and learn from my experience and don’t watch this at work (or in public)! 😉

Now it’s your turn… Tell me what your are loving (and what I should check out!) in the comments! Happy weekend, friends!

Happy 2016!

2016 Goals Planner Pic

Hello! Happy 2016 (yes, I fully realize it is February, make that March, not January 1!)! 🙂 I hope your year is off to a wonderful start. As you might have guessed by my absence from the blog, 2016 is already going quickly!

I have spent the first part of this year thinking about and focusing on what I want to achieve in 2016. Last year, I had a somewhat complex list of goals, that I reviewed quarterly and tried to post about as I met milestones along the way. While I liked this structure in theory, it proved to be difficult to keep up with. When I posted my end of year recap, I realized there were goals I had identified in January, that I had completely forgotten about by December (“Learn How to Sew Paper” – I am looking at you!).

Last December, my friend Jennifer Kennedy recommended I read The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to set goals, but doesn’t ever quite achieve them all. One of the main concepts of the book is that we should start viewing a year as only 12 weeks. By shortening the amount of time we have to achieve a “yearly” goal, every day, every hour and every minute counts more. This also allows us to adjust goals more quickly than waiting until November and realizing we still have a long way to go and subsequently getting bummed and not working towards the goal any longer. This 12 week concept really resonated with me, since I have previously liked setting quarterly goals!

End of Year Goal Recap!

Hello friends – long time, no talk! 🙂 Am I the only one who is simultaneously excited for the new year and a little disappointed about not quite getting everything that I wanted to accomplished in 2015? Even though I have these conflicting feelings, I am trying to focus on the positive “clean slate” feel of 2016. Since I missed my 3rd quarter goal review altogether, I wanted to make sure my last post of 2015 was a final review of this years goals.

In case you missed them: 1st Quarter Goal Recap and 2nd Quarter Goal Recap. For this end of year recap, I have listed all of the mini goals I started the year with in pink and then a summary of how I did in black. You can click the link following each number to see my full original post about each goal category. You might want a beverage of some sort before you start this! 😉

Friday Favorites // 10.30.15

Happy Halloween! It’s finally the weekend! Woo-hoo – we made it! I really shouldn’t complain, because I had last Monday off, so the work week was short me. 🙂 As with my previous Friday Favorites posts, below is a random assortment of businesses, articles and other miscellany that I am loving.

Sunflower Paperie & Carrots N Cake 60th Birthday Collaboration

A banner from my shop was featured on Tina’s blog, Carrots N Cake, again! Tina is SO fun to work with. You can see this previous post for her other parties I have created decor for.

I went to graduate school with Amy who started an awesome business, Barnside Breaks, several years ago. She lives out in the country, has a full fledged skate park on her property and has a red heeler. In sum, she is amazing. She makes jewelry and home goods out of used skateboards and her designs aren’t like anything I have ever seen!

The more we hike and camp, the more I love REI. I was excited to see the announcement from their CEO that they won’t be open on Black Friday.

After several years away, Adele released a new song this week! I can’t wait for her new album to come out in November!

Now it’s your turn… Tell me what your are loving (and what I should check out!) in the comments! Happy weekend, friends!

Friday Favorites // 10.16.15

Happy Friday (now Saturday), friends! It’s been awhile since I shared a “Friday Favorites” post (or any post for that matter, haha!), so I thought it would be fun to post today! These posts are a quick way for me to share things that I am loving currently.

RMNT Sept. 15

We recently traveled to Colorado (see Rocky Mountain National Park photo above) where everyone was carrying a Hydro Flask. I recently purchased the 40 oz. wide mouth bottle in “orange zest” and am waiting on my straw lid to arrive, so I can start using it. The biggest selling points for me are that the bottles don’t “sweat” and ice is reported to last forever in it!

I am loving Ryan Adam’s cover of Taylor Swift’s album 1989, specifically the song Bad Blood. If you are looking for some drama, Google Ryan Adam’s and read all about the controversy surrounding him covering her album. While I agree with some of the points made, at the end of the day, if Taylor is o.k. with it, then I am too. 😉

Another cover song I am loving is Chris Cornell’s version of Nothing Compares to You originally sang by Sinead O’Connor.

Speaking of drama, I am currently reading The Girl in the Spider’s Web – the next Lisbeth Salander novel. I loved the first three Lisbeth Salander books by Stieg Larsson, so I am excited to see the character continue with a new author. So far the book has been well written and very similar stylistically to the first three books.

As I referenced above, we visited Colorado in September for my boyfriend’s birthday. In addition to visiting lots of breweries (New Belgium and Avery Brewing were our favorites!), we also spent some time in Rocky Mountain National Park. Our “American the Beautiful” annual pass had expired, so we purchased a new one. Now our goal is to beat our record of seeing 9 parks in one year!

Your turn! What are you loving currently?! I would love to hear about your favorites in the comments!

Gratitude Catch-up

Would you like to know one of my favorite things about blogging? That I can make my own rules and then proceed to break them – haha! As a first born, people pleaser, breaking rules isn’t really in my DNA, so this “perk” of having my own blog is really quite thrilling. 😉 The most recent example of this is when I introduced a new Instagram “photo-a-day” challenge and then proceeded to go “off the grid” for the long weekend. Never fear, I am back online and ready to play photo-a-day catch-up! As a quick reminder, I am trying to focus on positive things daily this month. You are welcome to play along by using #SPgratitude on Instagram, so that I can see your photos.

Lately I have been grateful for…

Trips planned for the holiday weekend;

Trying something new (that I have wanted to do for years!);

What have you been thankful for recently?!

Welcome September!

Knock, knock! Anyone there?! It’s me – Kate the girl who formerly blogged! 😉

Where the heck did August go?! As you might know, I work in higher education, so August is always a busy time of year. Additionally, I started a new position at work at the end of May, so this past August seemed like it was extra busy, because I had the learning curve of a new position adding to an already crazy month. There were many days in the last month where my attitude was negative and I felt as though I couldn’t get everything done. Knowing that August was going to be hectic, I put the Sunflower Paperie Etsy shop in “vacation” mode, so that I could focus on my full-time job. While this was super helpful for my full-time job, I have found that I miss my creative outlet.

With the start of a new month, I have been thinking a lot about my business and my life in general. More than anything, I have decided that I need to refocus on being positive and grateful. I also want to refocus on my business and be more intentional with how I move it forward. In support of these efforts, I am going to post something on Instagram daily that I am thankful for. Some of these photos might be part of a longer blog post, while others might just be a quick photo and caption. If you are interested in joining me in this gratitude exercise, feel free to use the hashtag #SPgratitude on your Instagram photos, so I can follow along with you.

Today I am (extra) thankful for my partner. He also works in higher education as a professor, so he understands August more than most. I honestly couldn’t have gotten through the past month without him. Not once did he complain about me working late or on the weekends and any time I wanted to do something “fun” he quickly lined something up. He constantly listens to me and tries to get me to focus on the positive. He has also become quite talented at taking goals we have talked about and making them a reality (we started kayaking classes this past weekend and booked a fall trip that includes a new state capitol visit!). September is also his birth month, so hopefully I can come up with a gift that is fitting for someone who means so much to me. 🙂

Alright, your turn! What are you thankful for today?!

P.S. The above photos are from Wyoming – where the landscapes are so perfect, they look fake!

Sunflower Paperie Friday Favorites - Ben and Jerrys

Happy Friday! I inadvertently took a two week vacation from my blog – sorry about that! I cracked up this morning because Facebook sent me an e-mail, and there was a big reminder on my newsfeed, that I hadn’t posted to my business page in two weeks. Facebook is so pushy, haha! Never fear Facebook (and my other 2 readers), I am back today with another edition of Friday Favorites.

I am a history lover and one of the first topics that interested me in the subject was the Holocaust. This article about Nicholas Winton brought tears to my eyes and inspiration to my heart. His sentiment, “Some people revel in taking risks, and some go through life taking no risks at all” really struck a chord with me. This video of Mr. Winton is also touching.

I LOVE Instagram accounts that are used for promoting compassion and empathy towards others (both human and canine!). Humans of New York (HONY) is definitely a favorite account. If you aren’t following Brandon, his account is totally worth signing up for Instagram for.

Susie’s Senior Dogs (who happens to be run by the girlfriend of Brandon who started HONY) is another account that always pulls at my heart strings.

I also respect Mark Bustos and his mission – he is a hair stylist who provides hair cuts to the homeless. His motto of “be awesome to somebody” is inspiring and I love that he uses his trade to bring confidence and hope to the less fortunate.

The Pressbound Etsy shop is having a 50% off sale – I stockpiled a TON of beautiful cards! She is actually closing her shop, so once something sells out it is gone for good.

Have you ever had a speculoos cookie? I actually haven’t, but I am loving this Ben and Jerry’s flavor and this Trade Joe’s candy treat that are speculoos cookie flavored. I highly recommend both!

Alright, your turn! Tell me in the comments what you are loving this week!

State Capitol Series – Salt Late City, UT

Hello! Today I have the next installment of my state captiol tour series – Salt Lake City, Utah! Two years ago I visited Salt Lake City and Utah for the first time. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and the weather was awesome. I loved this first impression of Utah and after visiting several National Parks there last summer, it has officially become one of my favorite western states. The Utah state capitol didn’t disappoint either, so I am excited to share some photos from our visit.

Sunflower Paperie blog - SLC, UT dome

We visited Salt Lake City in 2013 right before we moved to Arizona, because my boyfriend grades Advanced Placement (AP) exams and Salt Lake is where the grading sessions are held. The grounds of the capitol were beautiful, so I was excited for the tour. Guided tours are offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. When we arrived they let us know that all of the tours guides were busy with a children’s summer camp tour that morning, but that we were welcome to join in on the group. The kids ended up providing LOTS of entertainment and the tour guides were excellent.
