You may be starting to notice a trend in my Creative Spotlight features… All of the creatives I have interviewed have been current or former students I have worked with (I seriously work with the BEST population – college students rock!)! This week’s interview with Brooke Smith, owner of Brooke Marcella Photography, maintains this trend as Brooke is a recent graduate who I met through work.
Many of you know that I work with business students at Arizona State University. As you might imagine, professional development is a big part of a business students experience while in college. I met Brooke during my first month at ASU when she was taking headshots for a group of student staffers I work with. Brooke is an Arizona-based photographer who since graduating this past December, is working her photography business full-time. She is super-talented and a delight to work with! All of the photos in this post were provided by Brooke and illustrate perfectly what a fun spirited person she is.
1. What do you do (full-time, part-time, etc.)?
I recently graduated from ASU in December and decided to pursue my passion and business full time, which is photography! It’s been an exciting journey so far and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
2. How did you get into photography / blogging? How old were you when you started?
I’ll start with photography: I honestly don’t know what gave me the desire to want a camera, but my senior year of high school that’s what I asked for Christmas and I got it. I was hooked early on and was doing everything I could to learn more and improve my skills. When I got to college my camera took a back seat and then I picked it back up around sophomore year and have been going strong ever since.
I started blogging as a way to show off my photos and the more I did it the more I loved it. I use it not only to tell my clients stories, but my own story as well. One of the things I love most about my business is that it’s not just business. I tell what’s going on in my life, my experiences, and share with my audience what I am going through.
3. What’s your favorite type of photo shoot?
This is a tough one. I honestly love photographing anything as long as the subject is fun! But right now I’d have to say seniors are my favorite. Although I recently got into sports photography and that is really awesome as well.
4. What’s your favorite part about having a photography business / blogging?
Depends on the day, some days I will go into super business mode and then other days I will be planning crazy shoots and I love it all! 🙂 BUT I would say the thing I love most is having the freedom, flexibility, and creativity to do what I want.
5. What 3 words best describe YOU?
Energetic, Positive, and Determined
6. If you could meet anyone from history, who would it be and why?
Probably Martin Luther King Jr. because he was so strong in the face of adversity and never gave up.
7. Besides photography / blogging, what are your other creative interests?
DIY projects! Sometimes I like to think I’m a little craftier than I am, but most of the time they don’t turn out so bad. For example, I took an old wooden dresser and sanded it, painted it and it looks like it came right out of Ikea!
8. Top 3 Instagram accounts that make you smile.
Oh this is so tough!!!
1. @gopro – if you don’t follow it you should!
2. @humansofny – incredible stories
3. @iamthesam – absolutely amazing photographer!
9. What are you currently reading (blogs, books, magazines)?
Currently I am reading Gone Girl as my fun book and I just finished ‘#GIRLBOSS’ (which was AMAZING) and have started ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’.
10. Describe your ideal day.
My ideal day would start off with doing something outdoors like hiking or riding my bike, then I would relax and read my book or catch up on my blog reading. After that head to an epic shoot with a killer sunset and then come home and edit the photos. Then I’d finish the night off by hanging with friends and family or watching a movie. 🙂
11. What business tools do you depend on daily?
My main business tools are 17hats and excel. I use 17hats as my client management software and it is absolutely amazing! I use excel to keep track of all my expenses and income.
12. What one piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
It takes hard work, long hours, dedication, and lots of mistakes, but don’t let the mistakes get in the way of your success!
13. If someone gave you $1,000 (after taxes) how would you spend it?
Being that I just got out of college I do have student loans, so first it would go to that, but if I didn’t have those I would spend it on a conference for creative people.
14. Regarding your business and blog, what are you most excited about for 2015?!
I am most excited about the amount of time I have for 2015. This is the first time my business will be my sole focus and I can’t wait to see what happens when I put all my time and effort to not only grow my business, but improve my skills as well.
I hope you enjoyed reading Brooke’s interview as much as I did! Below are all of her social media details, so make sure to show her some love!
